About iptsi Serpent
iptsi Serpent is a grid arcade game about restraint. You steer a serpent around a neon field, eating orbs that make it longer and faster. The mechanic is as old as mobile gaming and it survives because it is genuinely difficult for a reason no amount of graphics fixes: the longer you survive, the less room you have to move.
The design goal was a game that can be played entirely one-handed. Steering is by swipe on a touchscreen or the arrow keys on a keyboard, and there is nothing else to press. That simplicity is deliberate โ it means the game needs no tutorial and no translated text, so it can be shipped to any market without adaptation.
How to play
- Steer โ arrow keys or W A S D on a keyboard; swipe in any direction on a touchscreen.
- Eat the orb โ each one is worth 10 points, adds a segment, and shortens the gap between moves.
- Do not reverse โ turning straight back on yourself is ignored rather than fatal, so a mistimed input will not kill you.
- The walls are solid, and so is every segment behind your head.
The speed increase is capped so that the game stays playable rather than becoming impossible. What ends a run is the space you have left, not the pace you are moving at.
How it was built
Like the other games here, iptsi Serpent is one self-contained HTML file. The grid, the serpent, the orb and the pulse that fires when you eat are all drawn on a canvas at runtime, and the sounds are generated in the browser rather than loaded as audio files. There are no libraries, no fonts to fetch and no network requests once the page has loaded, which is why the whole game is smaller than a single photograph on this site.
The serpent is drawn as a chain of rounded segments whose opacity fades toward the tail, so its direction and its length are both readable at a glance without any interface elements. The input is queued two turns deep rather than one, which is what makes fast direction changes feel responsive instead of dropped.
Why it is free
All twenty games on this site are originals, built in-house and owned by iptsi rather than licensed from anyone. They are here to be played, and to show what a light, immediate, text-free title looks like in practice โ the kind of game that works in a browser on a phone. No account, no download, and no advertising on this page.
